2 Corinthians 7:8-9 King James Version (KJV)
8 For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season.
9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.
2 Corinthians 7:8-9 English Standard Version (ESV)
8 For even if I made you grieve with my letter, I do not regret it—though I did regret it, for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while. 9 As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.

8 Paul did not want to grieve people but if there were under the Holy Spirit then it needed to be done but he would have preferred them to have their hearts right. Paul also knew they would be overcomers if they looked to Jesus, when we are grieved we need to look to Jesus.
9 Paul praised God because they would repent and turn to righteousness. We are to turn from sin to Jesus. Sometimes sin and turning to Christ leaves a cost even though, Jesus is worth much more sometimes we have to sacrifice to follow the Lord, it is a blessing when we don’t.
